REVIEW: TESCO’S MILK CHOCOLATE VIENESSE BISCUITS

We made it through to the middle of the month. Woop Woop!

Let me just cut straight to the chase and say Tesco came through on this one.

Growing up in Nigeria, my mum used to send us containers of clothing, food and books every term. One particular biscuit stood out from the rest and that was the Tesco own brand chocolate chips cookie. It had a subtle undertone of cinnamon and nutmeg and tasted of freedom. Lo and behold, when I got back to England (that’s a traumatic story for another day), they had changed the formula and what was once great was now grim. The point of that story detour is that I tend to shy away from buying Tesco’s own brand biscuits due to that biscuit betrayal.

I’ve been missing out guys.

Last year when I reviewed the Luxury box of Borders Biscuits, the Vienesse Whirls as good as they tasted came third and the Divinely Chocolate Chip Cookies came second.

Tesco’s chocolate vienesse is what happens when you merge the two and splatter some more milk chocolate on that.

THE VERDICT

Taste; Light and buttery, the milk chocolate balances out the creaminess of the Vienesse swirl

Texture; a thin Vienesse base coated in smooth milk chocolate

Packaging; These come in a black tray which is then packaged in a box

Price; 99p per box and 16 in each pack works out to be just over 6p per biscuit.

Crunchability; If 10 is jaw-breaking crunchiness and 1 is the texture of a cake masquerading as a biscuit (like a softer jaffa cake, (clue’s in the name people), I’ll give these a 7, it’s very snappable (is that a word? I’m making it one if it isn’t)

Dunkability; I’m not a fan of dunking chocolate coated biscuits in a hot drink because the chocolate melts off and you’re left with.

I tend to have chocolate biscuits with milk.

Nutritional Value; There are 16 biscuits in each pack and each pack weighs 135g. The nutritional breakdown below is per biscuit (on the right hand side)

Energy 2227kJ (533kcal) 194kJ (46kcal)
Fat 30.1g 2.6g
Saturates 17.7g 1.5g
Carbohydrate 59.7g 5.2g
Sugars 32.8g 2.9g
Fibre 1.5g 0.1g
Protein 5.1g 0.4g
Salt 0.7g 0.1g

Accompaniment… a glass of milk or ginger tea

Reminds me of… the love child of Borders Vienesse whirls and their divinely chocolate chip cookies

OVERALL SCORES

I would give this an 8, beautifully done, snaps perfectly and is just the right amount of sweetness.
